The Maui community stepped into the magical world of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland at Book Trust’s Un-Birthday Party on February 22, 2025. The event, held at Ocean Organic Farm & Distillery, celebrated 20 years of the Book Trust program in Hawaii and raised funds to support book access for keiki.

Dressed in Wonderland-themed attire, more than 100 guests enjoyed a whimsical evening that included dinner, drinks, birthday cupcakes, croquet, and stunning sunset views.

“This event was truly a celebration! A celebration of books, community, and two decades of the Book Trust program making an impact across the Hawaiian Islands.” said Ben Reuler, Vice President of Development for Book Trust. “Our secret sauce at Book Trust is joy—sparking the joy of reading so kids learn to read so they can read to learn. It was only fitting to feel so much joy, and love, at this event. Our community of supporters is the gold standard, my heart is so warm.”

The evening also honored Book Trust partners and supporters. Kula Elementary School received recognition at the event with the Laulima Award for program excellence. A special tribute recognized Susan Kean and her late husband, Jac Kean, with the Lokomaika’i Award.

The Keans were early supporters of Book Trust and were instrumental in expanding the organization to Hawaii schools. In honor of the Keans, all donations from the event paddle raise will go towards the newly established Jac Kean Memorial Fund.

In the past 20 years, Book Trust’s work in Hawaii has supported more than 80,000 keiki in choosing and owning an estimated 800,000 books. Book Trust continues to support thousands of students in building personal libraries through partnerships with 12 schools across the islands.
