Volunteers from the Denver community smiled as they were introduced to Alsup Elementary School first graders. This group of adults from across the Denver Metro Area were joining Alsup students on a special day: a Book Trust Book Celebration! Book Celebrations are important classroom events that recognize the arrival of students’ new books, and include dedicated time for reading, and engaging with the latest additions to students growing personal libraries in partnership with volunteers.
After students chose their books through the Book Trust flyer earlier in the month, the books arrived at Lindsay Mazzeo’s classroom, and the Book Trust volunteers helped distribute them to students on this sunny Tuesday. Students were excited to share their selections with the volunteers, their classmates, and family members.
Popular books included I Spy Fly Guy by Ted Arnold and The Good Egg by Jory John. Students read in pairs and small groups, complete with important discussions on the novelty of a talking fly, and giggles along the way.
“We want students to become excited about reading, we don’t want it to be a chore,” said Lindsay Mazzeo, a teacher at Alsup Elementary School. “Book Trust makes reading fun and sparks joy and motivation in the students.”
