When Maggie’s oldest daughter was in elementary school, she would come home with graphic novels from Book Trust. At first, Maggie was concerned.
“You need to read chapter books because that’s how you become better at reading,” she would say. Then her daughter said something that Maggie will never forget: “But Mom, these are the books that motivate me to read!”
Maggie realized her daughter’s love for graphic novels—specifically, the Bone series—was what sparked her love for reading. Instead of retreating to her room to scroll her phone or play video games, Maggie’s daughter would curl up with her new graphic novel. These books fueled her creativity and shaped her love for art.
Today, Maggie’s daughter is a sophomore in high school, who still loves graphic novels and dreams of a career in the creative industry. “She’s very much an artist—she loves drawing and painting,” Maggie shared.
“I didn’t realize it at the time, but graphic novels are how she connected to reading.”
Maggie is forever grateful for Book Trust, for letting her daughter choose books that spoke to her personal interests—and she’s thrilled her youngest, a preschooler, will get to experience the same joy.
